Q: How would you describe your home in a few words?
A: Comfort zone, where I can leave work at the doorstep.
Q: Tell us about your home.
A: Our home is a detached, 2,800-square foot, three-floor, new build located in Oakville. We moved in October of 2010. The style is contemporary and open concept with a lot of room for growth. Indoors, we added a home gym with an area for yoga and another for our spin bikes. It was painted in deep warm, soft beiges. The recreation/ games room is an addition that both our adult and children guests alike enjoy when we entertain. Our office, located on the second floor, at the front of the house, has bay windows. Outdoors, we have a wonderful backyard that we have poured a lot of love and labour. We consider our backyard our cottage in the city.
Q: Who shares this home?
A: Jen and I share this home with our three beautiful pets: two golden retrievers — Cashew the baby (3-years-old) and Mickey who is our rescued golden (10-years-old) and our cat Tom (15-years-old). Tom is the man of the house. Cashew and Tom are inseparable. Cashew is always seeking attention.
Q: What attracted you to this space?
A: When we first walked into the house we fell in love with the open concept layout and the oversized windows that allow for a lot of light to flood in, even on overcast days. The home is located close to the 407 for my commute to the office in Thornhill, and 20 minutes from where my wife Jen works. Another important criteria for buying a house was we wanted to be close to our families. Once we came for our house tour and took a walk around the neighbourhood, we were sold.
Q: What is your favourite room and why?
A: The living room is our comfortable space for down-time and where conversations happen.
Q: How would you describe your decorating style?
A: My decorating style is clean and modern with a bit of a country feel. On the first floor, we used a neutral palette which I find calming and relaxing. On the second floor, we allowed our creative expression to take over! For example, in the master bedroom and the master ensuite, we painted accent walls in a warm burgundy tone. The ensuite has double vanities that we love. In our office, we used a vibrant green and grey motif to liven up the space and let our personalities out. The kitchen has warm, brown granite countertops and oak cupboards. Jen makes the most delicious shepherd’s pie. I’m great at clean-up. I dabble in abstract landscaping painting. Pieces of my work hang in the living room/dining space.
Q: What is your fondest memory in this home?
A: Hosting our engagement party in September 2011. We invited 100 of our closest family, friends and colleagues to celebrate the union and commitment we made to each other. Just to be surrounded by that much love, warmth and peace – in that moment – was magical.
Q: What’s the one item in this house you can’t live without?
A: I might be cheating here because my answer is the back deck and technically, the back deck is outside! However, if you consider that a home’s backyard is an additional room and an extension of the home itself, then my answer qualifies. Because of our backyard, we don’t feel like we need a cottage because of where we live and what we have built.
Q: Weekends at home, what are we most likely to find you doing?
A: Enjoying our little oasis in the city.
Q: If your walls could talk, what would they say?
A: “This house is filled with a lot of love, laughter and energy!”
